Customs Regulations applicable while shipping to Algeria

Located in North Africa along the Mediterranean coast, Algeria is the 10th largest country on the continent with an economy centered on its vast oil resources. Whatever your reasons for relocating to Algeria, you'll need to be properly prepared when entering the country through customs.

Here's what you need to know when preparing to travel to Algeria from the United States:

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY

  • Valid passport; last entry stamp must be shown
  • Certificate of Change of Residence, issued by the Algerian Consulate/Embassy at your origin
  • Employment contract
  • Residence visa
  • Work permit
  • Valued Inventory (detailed, in French), consularized
    • For electrical items you must state the make, model and serial number
    • Must also state the quantity of records, cassettes, tapes and videos
  • Bank guarantee or letter of guarantee
  • Invoice for all electrical appliances

SHIPPING AND CUSTOMS REGULATIONS

  • Customer must be present at clearance
  • Only one shipment per customer is allowed through customs
  • All shipments are subject to inspection at customs clearance
  • Household must be completed prior to arrival at customs clearance

PROHIBITED ITEMS

The following items are prohibited from entry into Algeria through customs and may be seized upon arrival:

  • Live plants
  • Pornographic materials
  • Weapons and ammunition
  • Radio equipment (items such as walkie-talkies, transmitters, CB radios, etc.)
  • Alcohol and tobacco products
  • Drugs
  • Currency and jewelry
  • Political materials

RESTRICTED ITEMS

The following items are dutiable and/or restricted:
  • All new furniture that is less than six months old and all office furniture, regardless of date of purchase
  • Food items in large quantities
  • Appliances - note: only one of each appliance is allowed into the country duty-free, all other appliances will be restricted and duties will be assessed upon arrival
  • Liquor

MOTOR VEHICLE REGULATIONS

If you will be shipping your car to Algeria, the following guidelines and regulations will apply:
  • All foreigners to Algeria will require proof of an import license
  • All vehicles must be new at the time of shipping
  • All custom duties will be assessed upon shipping

PETS AND ANIMAL REGULATIONS

Algeria currently does not have any clearly stated requirements regarding the shipment of pets or other animals into the country through customs, with the exception of poultry and the exportation of turkey hatching eggs and turkey one-day-old poults, which require the completion of a health certification form to be submitted to the Algerian consulate prior to shipping and arrival in customs.
