Moving is challenging and exciting, but when it comes to international relocation, you're faced with added steps to ensure your new life overseas begins smoothly.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY
Moving to a foreign country is a much more complicated process than simply visiting, and you will need to have the proper documentation to establish residency and clear customs once you arrive. You should allow up to six weeks from the date of handing over the documents listed below to have an import permit issued. It is a good idea to get in contact with a destination agent in the Netherlands as soon as your move has been booked.
When moving to the Netherlands, you will need:
- Three copies of legible Valued Inventory list with signature of shipper (detailed list of all cartons, avoid PBO Packed by Owner)

Copy of passport

Copy of proof of registration of commune customer intends to live (document can be obtained at town hall, and is called vestiging uit het buitenland)

Employer's declaration stating place and duration of employment in The Netherlands

Copy of lease or deed of future residence

Full contact information/delivery address of customer

Application form for exemption from duties and taxes (for the importation of household goods - must be in Dutch) and an additional customs statement. It is at the discretion of Dutch customs if they grant this request
Note: You can clear your goods through customs once you have registered at your local town hall, but keep in mind that this can only be done after the start of your lease contract.
SHIPPING REGULATIONS
Upon moving to the Netherlands, you must be present at customs clearance, and be prepared to have all of your shipments inspected by authorized personnel.
PROHIBITED ITEMS
Most countries have a list of items that are not allowed in the country whatsoever. In the Netherlands, these items include, but may not be limited to:
- Explosives

Products made from endangered or exotic animals

All protected species of fauna or flora (examples: orchids and cacti, coral, iguanas, lizards)

RESTRICTED ITEMS
You will find that certain countries may allow some items or possessions, but there will be rules regarding specifics like licenses and quantity of these items. In the Netherlands, some of these items include:
- Tobacco products

Alcohol

Firearms and ammunition (must have a license)

Foodstuffs (meat, fish and dairy products - limited to one kilogram)
MOTOR VEHICLE REGULATIONS
If you're bringing your car or motorcycle with you to the Netherlands upon your move, and have a valid vehicle registration, you can usually take your vehicle over the border and use it without paying tax. However, some restrictions apply.You must apply for a permit with the Dutch Customs to import your car with a foreign registration number.
PETS AND ANIMAL REGULATIONS
You are allowed to bring pets into the Netherlands provided you do not intend to trade or sell these animals. If you will be bringing dogs or cats, they must have their own pet passport and be micro chipped. A credible veterinarian must examine your pet and give you a health certificate prior to obtaining the passport. The passport contains all of your pet's vaccinations (which should be up to date) and health information.

International moves are much more complex than a local or long distance move, as they come with numerous expenses and strict custom regulations, and there aren't global regulations for international moves.
