Keeping your home safe and secure can be a difficult job. Installing a home security system is an easy option--however, after figuring out the costs of installation you might decide against it.

Don't worry--you can still have the peace of mind that comes with owning a home security system without the high price tag if you install it yourself. Read on for more information about how to install a home security system and save yourself money in the process.

Alarm systems

Many alarm systems utilize motion sensors or magnetic contact plates that set off the alarm when they are parted. Passive infrared detectors (PIRs) detect the movement of a heat source and are commonly used in home alarm systems. Magnetic contact detectors are installed on door and window frames and set off the alarm when one magnet is separated from the other.

Both systems are simple to install with a wireless system which neesd batteries to operate instead of hardwired systems. To install a wireless system you'll only need a few batteries, a screwdriver or drill, and time.

Wireless home security system installation

The first thing you'll need to do when installing your wireless home alarm system is decide on sensor locations. Walk around your home and identify the places that are most vulnerable to a break-in. Doors are usually the number one target for burglars so be sure to place a sensor on all exterior doors.

Windows are also prone to break-ins, but it can be costly to put a sensor on each window in your home. Instead, consider placing a motion sensor in each room that will trigger if anyone does enter the room. Another option would be to focus on installing sensors on first-floor windows which can provide easy access to burglars.

Once you've decided where to place your sensors, installing them is as simple as securing them to the door and window jambs. Before beginning the installation process, test the sensor and transmitter for their ranges from the control panel. They should be able to operate properly at that distance.

Door sensors consist of two pieces: the larger piece is the wireless transmitter and the smaller piece is the magnet that completes the circuit. When the circuit is broken (by opening the door or window) the alarm will activate.

To install the sensor and transmitter follow these steps:
  1. Align the magnet on the door edge opposite the sensor.
  2. Drill pilot holes and attach the magnet to the door with the screws provided.
  3. Repeat the steps with the sensor on the door jamb.
After all the sensors are installed, you'll need to program the control panel. Plug the controller into an electrical outlet and a phone jack. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully -- if you make a mistake you may need to repeat the process.

If you've decided to invest in a hardwired home alarm system, it is recommended that you contact a professional electrician to install it for you. Part of the installation process may involve connecting the system so that it can connect to a central monitoring station--which means that many of the monitored systems will use licensed and authorized installers for their product.

Protect your home

Whichever way you decide to protect your home, even the smallest habits can make a difference.
  • Remember to lock all your doors and windows before leaving the house.
  • Older homes have locks that are easy to pick, consider changing your locks.
  • Don't hide a key outside in an obvious location.
  • Keep entryways well-lit to deter thieves.

After implementing a few of these tips, you'll be able to sleep soundly knowing your home is safer than when you started.
