Brief overview
Louisiana is appropriately shaped like a capital L and is bordered by Mississippi on the east, the Gulf of Mexico on the south, Texas on the west, and Arkansas on the north.

The positive point with Louisiana is its lower cost of living. And on the flip side is a report by independent firm, Morgan Quitno Press, that ranked LA in the bottom five of its criterion of selecting a state they are:
  • 4th least livable.
  • 4th least healthy.
  • 5th most unsafe.
  • 47th smartest state.

Morgan Quinto has been ranking states on the basis of several measures for the past one and half decade.

But for temporary visitors the state has many attractions, New Orleans is the major draw, known particularly for its picturesque French Quarter and the annual Mardi Gras celebration, held since 1838. The north's major city is Shreveport, where casinos and horse racing help bolster the economy, the state capital of Baton Rouge, in southeastern Louisiana, is home to Louisiana State University and the lingering legends and legacy of 1930s politician Huey P. Long.

Riverboat gambling has long been associated with the state and its mighty Mississippi River. The state has 11 floating casinos. Horse racing and betting can also be found in Bossier City, Lafayette and New Orleans.

Song: Give Me Louisiana

Written by Doralice Fontane
Composed by Dr. John Croom

Give me Louisiana,
The state where I was born
The state of snowy cotton,
The best I&apove ever known;
A state of sweet magnolias,
And Creole melodies
Oh give me Louisiana,
The state where I was born
Oh what sweet old memories
The mossy old oaks bring
It brings us the story of our Evangeline
A state of old tradition,
of old plantation days
Makes good old Louisiana
The sweetest of all states.

Give me Louisiana,
A state prepared to share
That good old southern custom,
Hospitality so rare;
A state of fruit and flowers,
Of sunshine and spring showers
Oh give me Louisiana,
The state where I was born
Its woodlands, Its marshes
Where humble trappers live
Its rivers, Its valleys,
A place to always give
A state where work is pleasure,
With blessings in full measure
Makes good old Louisiana
The dearest of all states.

Give me Louisiana,
Where love birds always sing
In shady lanes or pastures,
The cowbells softly ring;
The softness of the sunset
Brings peace and blissful rest
Oh give me Louisiana,
The state where I was born
The smell of sweet clover
Which blossoms everywhere
The fresh new mown hay
Where children romp and play
A state of love and laughter,
A state for all here after
Makes good old Louisiana
The grandest of all states.
