Brief overview |
|
|
The Eighth state to join the union, South Carolina has little to offer beyond marginal lower cost of living and lower pollution levels, AAA rating for the state government bonds (S&P 1999), and lesser density spaces. The people of SC believe in others' honesty and trustworthiness slightly less than the average American. They attend the town functions and school meetings in a lower proportion than the people in any American state do. The crime rates are more, so is unemployment, the educational scores are pathetic and so are the health statistics. In fact, an independent research outfit, Morgan Quinto Press has awarded the South Carolina the 10th state from the bottom in the list of Smartest states. It has also ranked SC as the 3rd least healthy state.
Setting aside the current scenario, South Carolina is considered to be a land of "firsts." It was the first province in the New World to plant rice for sale. South Carolinians were the first to seize British property by force as a prelude to the American Revolution, and they were the first to secede from the Union when the Civil War was eminent. The state is home to the first public museum and the first formal gardens in the United States. Beth Elohim Reform Temple was the birthplace of Reform Judaism in the United States.
For the purposes of moving around, South Carolina offers luxurious resorts with fine dining and world-class golf courses, excellent fishing and the longest deer-hunting season in the country. The state parks offer you to canoe down a mountain stream or ride a horse. For a family looking for a vacation or a yourng couple seeking a perfect hide-out, South Carolina is one of the best bet. If you are an avid golfer, your appetite is sure to be satisfied by the 350+ courses that South Carolina offers. Other points of interest include Fort Sumter National Monument, Fort Moultrie, Fort Johnson, and aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor; the Middleton, Magnolia, and Cypress Gardens in Charleston; Cowpens National Battlefield; the Hilton Head resorts; and the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in Columbia. |

Song: Carolina |
|
|
Written by Henry Timrod
Composed by Anne Custis Burgess
Hold up the glories of thy dead;
Say how thy elder children bled,
And point to Eutaw&apos battle-bed.
Carolina! Carolina!
Throw thy bold banner to the breeze!
Front with thy ranks the threatening seas
Like thine own proud armorial trees,
Carolina! Carolina!
Thy skirts indeed the foe may part,
Thy robe be pierced with sword and dart,
They shall not touch thy noble heart,
Carolina! Carolina!
Girt with such wills to do and bear,
Assured in right, and mailed in prayer,
Thou wilt not bow thee to despair,
Carolina! Carolina!
