Hello - thanks so much for visiting Movers.com! Moving your fish tank can be a complicated process, so you want to make sure you have the right information to decide how you want to go about doing it.
Tips for moving your fish
If you hire a full service moving company, your movers will only be able to move your emptied fish tank on the moving truck. Your actual fish cannot be moved in the same way as your other belongings. Generally, pets accompany the owner during the move if traveling by car (and sometimes as a carry-on for flights), or they are shipped via airfreight.
What you need to know:
- Fish are sensitive to climate and environment change, so be sure to have all the materials needed to move your fish prior to doing so. You’ll need a temporary home for your fish while your aquarium is being shipped.
- Keep some of your aquarium’s water to be used at your new location. The bacteria that grows inside your fish tank is part of a delicate ecosystem, and saving as much as possible will help your fish (and other life in the tank) adjust accordingly once you are in your new home.
- If you are unsure of any steps you should take, contact your local aquarium supply store or pet store for advice.
- If you will be shipping your fish by air, make sure you make arrangements well in advance. Aquarium suppliers are generally the best option to “pack” your fish for air shipment.
You can look into pet moving services for more information on how to relocate your fish as quickly and safely as possible.
