At some point or another, you'll probably want to replace your bathtub. Whether it is showing signs of age or you just want to update the look of the bathroom, you might be tempted to buy a whole new tube. A much easier (and less costly) option is to install a bathtub liner over your existing tub.

Why Install a Tub Liner?

By putting in a liner, you can change the look of your tub and protect it from everyday wear and tear. Here are some more advantages of installing a new bathtub liner:
  • It is easy to clean

  • It will protect the underlining tub

  • Bathtub liners come in a wide variety of colors and styles

  • They are only 1/4 inch thick, so putting one in probably won't interfere with the existing structures

  • Saves you the trouble of replacing the entire tub

Weigh Your Options

Deciding to install a bathtub liner is only the first step; there are still many options to choose from before picking your liner. First of all, bathtub liners can be made of either PVC plastic or acrylic, with the latter option being the more expensive one. You'll also need to decide whether you want your lining to extend onto the walls or just cover the tub. Additionally, you might want (or need) to have your liner custom made to ensure it gives you the best fit over the existing tub.

TIP: You can visit a home improvement store, search online, or look through catalogs to find the bathtub liner that's right for you.

Installation

After choosing the lining and ordering it or picking it up from the store, you'll be ready to install it. The first step is to clean the existing tub thoroughly, since you don't want to put the lining over a tub covered in mildew or soap scum. You can then remove the fixtures, like the faucet and knobs. The next step is to cover the tub with an adhesive (you can ask the store where you buy the liner from which type to use). At this point, the liner should be place right on top of the tub.

After putting the fixtures back into place, apply some caulk to the edges of the liner, including the areas around the fixtures. Neglecting to caulk the liner can lead to moisture getting inside, resulting in mold and mildew. Once the new bathtub liner is set in place, give it a day or two for the adhesive and the caulk to dry before using the tub or shower.

Installing a new liner on top of your existing is a minimally invasive way to freshen up your bathroom. Instead of replacing the entire tub, you can simply cover it up with a new lining.
