Thanks for visiting Movers.com. I will try to help you with your question about confirming the registration numbers of moving companies.

USDOT number
It is good that you are looking to confirm a moving company's registration number since doing a background check is advisable when choosing a moving company. The number usually will be a USDOT (US Department of Transportation) number, which certifies that the company is a legitimate mover according to the federal government. This is required for all interstate movers.

If you have found a USDOT number, you can visit the Department of Transportation's website and enter it to see if the business is certified. Additionally, you can search by Docket Number or name on this page. Movers that only operate within one state don't need USDOT numbers, but there are other state-level certifications that can be searched as well.

You can also search registrations with the Better Business Bureau and the American Moving and Storage Association to see if the company has another certification that you can check online.

Rogue companies
If you can't obtain any type of certification number form a moving company, then it probably is a rogue company and should be avoided. Even if you do get a number, checking it online using the previously mentioned websites is a good approach because the number could have been given to you by fake movers who hoped you wouldn't check to see if it was legitimate.

Unfortunately, there are some illegitimate moving companies out there, but checking certifications should help you find a licensed mover.
