I live in the US, and my girlfriend wants to move in with me from Portugal. We both want this more than anything, where should we start and how should we proceed with this?

Hi there, and thanks so much for visiting Movers.com to find an answer to your question.

Long distance relationships, especially overseas ones, can be emotionally taxing. While I cannot give you advice regarding your specific situation, I can point you in the right direction when it comes to learning all about international relocation.

Before you start planning the logistics of the move, you (or in this case, you and your girlfriend) want to be sure that moving internationally is the right decision. You both should consider all aspects of moving in together, potential culture shock, and overcoming the fear of moving overseas.

Planning the actual move

An international move is a lot more complicated than a local or even a long distance move. You’ll have to research specific documents you will need, like a passport and visa/work visa. Having employment lined up before a big move is also helpful when it comes to obtaining some of these documents.

Since there’s no set rules or guidelines for international moving companies, it is imperative you do your research and get multiple estimates before deciding on hiring one. You should educate yourself on what questions to ask international movers, common mistakes to avoid, and the Federal Maritime Commission. Once you’ve done that, you can start comparing free quotes here at Movers.com, simply by filling out our fast and easy form – it will connect you with up to seven international movers in your area.

You will also need to submit inventory to customs for the clearance of household goods or any other items you may be bringing – but be sure to research how far in advance you have to submit your paperwork, what paperwork you will need, and what items are prohibited and restricted for import.
