Should I be helping the movers?

While you shouldn't lift anything or help load the movers' truck, there are things that you can do that will help the movers out. If you were to try and help load items into the truck, you could become a liability for the movers and the company, so it's best to stay clear or that. However, we have included a list of what you can do to help.

Here are some things you can do to help movers:

  • Unplug all electronics (as possible)
    • You can label the cords and pack them up so you know where they are, and where they go when you get into your new place.
  • Remove everything off the wall
    • This includes pictures, paintings, anything you have up.
  • If you walk past something hanging up, take it down on moving day and lean it against the wall
    • The goal is to have the walls empty by moving day.
  • For the beds, strip off the bedding and pack that up so the only thing on the bed is the mattress and the frame
    • The bedding can be packed up and ready to be loaded into the moving truck, just make sure you label the box that it is in.
  • If there is anything you don’t want them to pack up, then label it and make sure to let them know
    • You can also load it into your vehicle (or wherever it is going) as soon as possible since accidents happen.
  • Remember to keep your valuables with you
    • This includes jewelry, cash, and even medications.
    • This eliminates the burden of the movers dealing with it, and if you have these items they won’t go missing.
  • Make sure to clearly label fragile boxes as "FRAGILE"
    • Furthermore, let the movers know which boxes or items are fragile so they can take more care with those items.
  • Clean out your fridge since movers won’t touch any perishable items
  • The night before moving day, make a spot for the movers to park the moving truck
    • This would include the best access to your apartment or even the driveway to your home.
    • Don’t let the movers get a ticket due to poor planning.

Overall, movers are very efficient and don’t need help loading or packing anything. But, doing the steps above will help in making their time loading and moving your items quicker and much more efficient. This is especially important if the movers are paid by the hour! The quicker and more efficient you can be, the less money you will have to shell out.

TIP: Remember, you can always offer movers food and drinks. Lunch always goes over well since it feeds the crew, so they can work quicker (and they won’t go out for food).
