• Modular sofa- If you have a modular lounge the standard-sized area rug may not fit under the couch perfectly as it may fall short on either side. It would be better to get a custom rug of a big size so it can connect all the elements and make the area spacious.

Amount of space:

Small space- If you have a small living room with less space, place the area rug in front of the sofa, leaving a narrow belt of empty space in between. This will make the room look spacious and lighter. You can also place small side tables instead of a wide coffee table to show more of the rug.

Big open-plan space- In a spacious room, the area rug should be placed under the front legs of the sofa on one side and the front of the legs of the chairs on the other side. If you have enough space in the room, get a larger rug and place the sofa entirely on the rug.

You can get either a round rug or a rectangular rug, as per your choice. If you are getting a rectangular rug, you will need to position the furniture on it perfectly to show symmetry. However, if you opt for a circular rug, the proportion would not matter as much.

When choosing the style and material of the rug, take into consideration the color of the walls and the sofa style. You can create any kind of atmosphere with your choice of rug. For example, a wool rug in a muted palette will add a sense of harmony and relaxation. A dark-colored rug with rich tones and texture will make the room appear moody and intimate. Another thing to keep in mind is the size of your furniture. If most of the rug is going to be covered by your sofa, don’t bother about getting an area rug with a beautiful pattern.
