It’s pretty normal to be completely overwhelmed when it comes to relocation, especially in regards to packing logistics. Whether you’ve lived in your home for years, or move frequently, you’ve still probably accumulated enough stuff to wonder where it all fit in the first place.

Before you decide what to pack first, you should make a packing supply list if you’re doing all the packing yourself. Ensuring you have the right materials is essential in getting the job done painlessly. You should also look into thicker cardboard boxes, as they can hold more items in each one.

Where to Start?

Since it is a good idea to get started with your packing at least six weeks prior to your move, you obviously do not want to begin by packing up your toiletries and other daily essentials just yet. You should start with any recreational rooms in your home that are not used on a daily basis, and begin by packing up any miscellaneous knickknacks, books, and room décor that you won’t miss in your day-to-day life.

You can leave a few moving boxes (make sure they are labeled!) in each room, and as you become more aware of the things you don’t really need each day, you can put these items in the boxes little by little.

Some places to start:

  • Emptying bookshelves
  • Taking down wall art and picture frames
  • Emptying China cabinets
  • Packing seasonal clothing in closets
  • Emptying miscellaneous “junk drawers”

If packing still seems daunting to you, you can look into hiring a service to do the packing for you. Get started here at Movers.com by filling out a free quote form, and get up to seven free quotes from moving services near you.
