Beds aren't too difficult to move, but when you stack one bed on top of another, suddenly things get a little more complicated. The average set of bunk beds will typically weigh around 150-200 pounds, depending on a few factors such as what material the beds are made of. Some bunk beds are made of wood frames and others are made from metal frames, with the wooden ones usually weighing more.

Moving bunk beds requires a little more work than moving a regular twin-sized bed, and also requires a little disassembly as well, in order to be able to fit the beds through doorways and load it onto the moving truck.

Preparing your bunk beds for the move

  • Separate the top and bottom bunks from each other. Before you move your bunk beds, you're going to have to do some disassembly to get the top and bottom bunks separated from each other. Since you won't be able to move them together, taking them apart and moving them separately, along with the frames and the mattresses, will be your best option.
  • Remove the mattresses and bedding from the frames. Mattresses tend to be fairly heavy, so removing the mattresses and bedding from your bunk beds prior to moving them will make them much lighter and easier to move on moving day. Pack and wrap your mattresses and bedding separately and load them onto the truck by themselves.
Moving your bunk beds
  • Use the proper moving equipment to load the bunk beds onto the truck. Like all large, heavy furniture, you should have the help of multiple people when moving the bunk beds. If you have access to a handtruck or dolly, you should use it in order to help you safely transport the bunk beds onto the moving truck.
  • Hire professional movers to lend a hand. Large, heavy items like bunk beds are difficult to move on your own, which is why it's always a smart idea to hire professional movers and packers to handle it for you.
