First thing's first: Can the headboard be taken apart in any way? If so, be sure to do this before attempting to move the headboard up the stairs, or anywhere for that matter. You will also want to make sure your headboard is properly packed to avoid any damage during the move, whether you hire a professional or not. If the headboard is in one piece, you'll want to measure it from top to bottom and side to side to figure out how you might be able to move it prior to hiring professionals as well – they will need to be aware of your heavy and/or oddly shaped item.
