It is definitely not a general practice to be asked for a deposit ahead of time to hold your delivery date. In fact, the majority of moving companies don't require payment until the day of your move.
Moving deposits
While it is highly uncommon for moving companies to request a deposit, it is not an illegal practice as some have wondered.
However, if this request on behalf of the moving company makes you uncomfortable, perhaps it's best if you go with a different mover. Especially since it's such a large sum of money.
Recognizing scams
To protect yourself against moving scams and moving fraud, we recommend learning more about the different types of moving scams that are out there. Reading up on performing a background check on your movers also wouldn't hurt.
