Home decor styles come and go and as they say, "everything comes back." If you're looking to incorporate a bit of something old into your new or current home, keep reading for tips on how to add a bit of retro to your home decor.

Choose a theme

Bright pops of color and egg-shaped chairs might come to mind when you think of the word "retro," but there's much more to it than that.

When planning out how to incorporate a bit of retro flair into your home, start by choosing a theme. You can try to focus on a decade like the kitchy 50s, the mod 60s or the bohemian 70s. Or maybe you do want to add pops of color and egg chairs to your home--whatever you decide, try to be consistent.

Focal points

You should try to create a focal point in every room of your home when you're decorating - regardless of the style. In your living room, it might be your fireplace-- in that case, add a few vintage wall hangings above the mantle.

The dining room is a bit easier -- the table is the focal point, so why not try and find a mid-century table or a vintage pendant lamp to hang over the table. One statement piece in a room can make a world of difference.

Color

Depending on the look you're going for, color will play a big role. Bright colors on an accent wall can be an simple way to ease into adding a retro touch to your home.

Prints and patterns

Is there a specific pattern or print that reminds you of your childhood? See if you can replicate it somewhere in your home!

Whether it's an iconic print on your grandmother's baking dish or a geometric rug you remember from your great-aunt's house, incorporating patterns is a smart way to bring a bit of retro flair to your decor.

Try framing an enlarged portion of your favorite retro pattern and hanging it on your wall. Did you love the vibrant flower prints from the 60s? Try reupholstering a few pillows to snuggle up to on the couch. These small touches are easy to change if you get tired of them but still have that bit of flair you're looking for.

Furniture

Vintage furniture is usually an investment, so choose your pieces wisely. When shopping, look for quality furniture that is well-made and don't just stick to popular manufacturers. Lesser-known manufacturers may still have good quality items but at a lower price. When you do finally decide on a piece make sure you take good care of it so it will continue to stand the test of time and  look beautiful in your home.

When choosing furniture, one or two large pieces will have an impact in a room. A cluster of small vintage knick-knacks displayed on a shelf can also add a bit of interest to your home. Make sure that the pieces you're buying go well together. That antique Victorian chair might look great, but will it pair well with your mid-century couch?
