Creating storage in your bathroom might seem like a tough task, but you can easily add more bathroom storage that is unique to your needs and home. Soon enough, you'll be taking these tips outside of the bathroom and utilizing them throughout your entire home!

Nooks and crannies

When thinking of storage solutions throughout your home, you might not automatically think of installing built-ins in your bathroom. Your bathroom is a great place to utilize the space between wall studs as built-in storage, provided it's not interfering with pipes.
  • Think of creating a small built-in cabinet next to your toilet as hideaway storage for toilet brushes, cleaning products or anything else you need nearby but should still be unseen.
  • Create a built-in shelf near your bathtub. It's an easy place to store extra towels, toiletries and other extras within reach.
  • If you don't have medicine cabinets in your bathroom, consider building one into the wall. It will be flush against the bathroom walls and you can essentially customize it to your needs.

Above the door

If you are lucky enough to have tall ceilings in your home, above your bathroom door is a perfect spot to install a small shelf. Just be sure to allow enough clearance for the door to swing open! You could use that shelf to keep dangerous cleaning products out of children's hands, but easily within your reach when it's cleaning day.

Hooks and knobs

Instead of having a single towel rack on the wall and maybe a hook on the door, install a coat rack in your bathroom. You could easily make your own decorative rack with a board and some hooks or even door knobs. You'll be able to hang multiple towels allowing them to all dry at once without overlapping.

If you need additional towel storage in your bathroom, a wine rack is another option. Roll the towel and store them just as you would a bottle of chardonnay.

Shelves and cabinets

Adding a piece of furniture into an already small room of your home may seem counter-intuitive, but it can be worth it in the end. Consider a tall bookshelf or even an apothecary-style cabinet to hold all your towels, toiletries and other bath time essentials--and look beautiful at the same time.

Odds and ends

Towels and toilet paper aren't the only thing people store in their bathrooms. Bobby pins, hair dryers, hair clippers -- you name it, the bathroom can become a catchall for random beauty and bathing items. Creating storage in areas that already have storage can be tricky, but try one (or a few) of these tips to store all those odds and ends.

  • Attach a magnetic strip to the inside of your medicine cabinet to keep tweezers, nail clipper and yes, bobby pins in plain sight without taking up space on those tiny shelves.
  • Under the sink, use a pair of stick on hooks to hold a basket from the dollar store and you've got an easy place to stash smaller items. This hook-and-basket method could easily translate to other rooms in your home for small item storage.
  • If you keep your hamper in your bathroom, stash it away inside it's own cabinet with a pull-out drawer. It's still accessible but guests don't need to see the amount of dirty towels you're trying to avoid.
It doesn't matter if you're trying to update your current bathroom or you're planning for your next home, these storage ideas can be easily used in any situation.
